How to Make the Best Salsa Verde

Want to know how to make the best salsa verde? All you need are a few simple ingredients and a blender to make this super easy salsa recipe. What is salsa verde? It’s the sauce you’ll find on every Mexican restaurant table and simply means “green sauce”. You’ve dipped your chips in it, drenched your tacos in it and have probably bought jars of it. But why pay good money for a sauce when you can make it at home for less than half the price? There are many versions of this sauce going around but this is my favorite because it’s extra spicy, tangy and goes a long way.

You can use this sauce for dipping chips or drizzling on your favorite foods but it’s also amazing as a simmering sauce. I’ve used a similar sauce for my cheesy baked chicken dish years ago that was a huge hit at my last gathering. All you’ll need for this salsa verde is tomatillos, yellow onions, serrano peppers, cilantro and salt and pepper. Simple, quick and delicious.

Not all supermarkets stock the tomatillos you’ll need for this recipe so if you can’t find it there, go to your nearest Latin food grocer. I can get them for about $1 or less a pound near me.

The tomatillos are sticky once you get the husks off so wash them well
tomatillos are very firm and cooking them make then much more tender and easier on your blender

Another variation to this recipe is roasting the tomatillos and peppers for a smoky and roasted flavor. For this recipe I am sautΓ©ing the vegetables but either way is delicious. Roasting of course takes a bit more time.
